Puffin Tours in Amble
More Than Just Puffins
Coquet Island serves as a sanctuary for puffins and several species of tern, including the common tern, Arctic tern, and the rare roseate tern. These birds nest in specially designed boxes placed around the island to encourage safe breeding upon their return. The boxes are prepared and maintained by wardens before the birds arrive and are then monitored throughout the season to assess the success of the year’s breeding efforts.
In addition to puffins, visitors can enjoy the sight of around 600 resident grey seals lounging along the rocky shoreline. Grey seals breed between August and December, with mothers nursing their pups for about 20 days before the young are left to feed and fend for themselves.
Eider ducks are also commonly seen around Coquet Island, often spotted in large numbers on the river near Warkworth Castle, where they feed among the weed and kelp.
